just for the record, everyone, i have amd k6 400 MHz with 192 megs of ram, although 8 megs is taken away by the bios for video, i think.
i've downloaded and burned a 3-cd set for slackware 11.0. i was just about to start in on it and some other distros but decided to check e-mail.
i think slackware sounds like exactly what i've been looking for all along. i want something hands-on that i can learn from, not merely something preorganized, although with tex and some source code and whatever tools i need to make use of them are thrown in, i'm not picky on all the other stuff.
knoppix worked live, too, but i'm still uncertain how i'd get into tex or the source code, if they exist on it.
