You can try one of the live CDs. If the system boots and runs from a live
CD your drive is most likely OK.

um, i don't suppose anyone knows of a cd-rom diagnostic out there i can use.
i just want to see if my 40X is a wee bit hoop'ed. if that's the problem,
i'll have to splurge a wee bit and get myself something that works.
my initial search via google yielded nothing.
