Tim,  I also had a similarly equiped machine with the same problem
whenever I let the burning software choose
the highest possible burning speed to create the CD image, the booting
of that CD almost always failed
with similar error messages. I solved the problem by reducing the speed
of the burning process to 16x and
even sometimes down to 8x (that's assuming your download image is not
corrupted).
If you do an integrity check on the CD you'll find out these files are
corrupted.



P.S.  There are half a dozen Slax Live CDs that are based on Slackware
Linux and 
available in sizes ranging from 50 megs for console based Linux to 200
megs with
Xwindows and XFce or KDE. You shouldn't have any problem running these
on your computer.
