I used to sometimes get burn broblems. now I always burn at 1/2 the rated speed of the burner and I never get problems

Oh, come on. It wasn't that long ago (it seems) when I used on average 2GB per install. at home I had Winnt4, Win95 and Slackware7 on a 6 GB drive. with 20 GB you should have no problem installing 2 OSs. And if you do it right you should be able to use the same /home partition between the 2 of them, you could also use the same /swap partition.
Of course it depends on what you mean by installing "complete distributions" but, didn't you say you have a K6400 cpu It would be real sluggish running KDE and you could make a pot of coffee in the time it takes openoffice.org to open so you don't want "complete distributions" anyway so you've got lots of room.
As far as window managers for older processors, I used to use WM (Window Maker) on Slakware in the 233 - 400 days, It was really light on resources (fast). Someone else recommended a different lightweight window manager that I've never heard of - he probably knows more than me as for the last 5 years at least I have just used Gnome (with whatever window manager my distro uses with it - used to be sawfish with slack, I don't even know what I use now on gentoo) and I don know what else is out there.
