just so you all know, slackware hasn't worked for me, so far, even
with the cds graham gave me. it must be the cd-rom/hardware.

sorry to keep you hanging. i just didn't want to send much more to the
listserv. thanks for all your help.

although i am, in fact, using dsl (and very happy to do so), it's for
the speed. standard installs of mandriva, slax, xandros, mepis, and
knoppix weren't working for me, mostly because of speed issues.

and, at this point, as much as i desire to learn everything about
linux and programming, i'm more concerned about being productive in
more financially realistic ways. i'm a writer, as i noted and am
thrilled, at the moment, to use ted (though tex might be cooler) with
a dvorak keyboard layout.

thank you all again. i promise to be more careful with future posts.
graham gave me a link to a page by eric s. raymond that should help me
out.
